Fiber College on the seashore

Sep 02, 2011
The annual Fiber College at Searsport Shores Ocean Campground offers the unique combination of everything fiber and the beautiful shoreline of Maine.

Searsport — Fiber College on Penobscot Bay will celebrate its sixth year Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 8 through 11 at Searsport Shores Ocean Campground, Route 1. It is the only fiber event in Maine that focuses on education and community building while relaxing by the ocean.

There will be 50-some juried classes ranging from weaving, dying, knitting, rug hooking and spinning to carving, rug hooking, drafting for weavers and photography for fiber artists. Students have the choice of taking classes, pre-chosen or chosen at the gate, or simply purchasing an entrance pass of $8 to spend a day.

Either way, visitors will be in the midst of natural beauty, watching scheduled demonstrations, visiting the Gallery show, strolling the Shoppers Boulevard, interacting with fiber critters and wandering through the acres of organic gardens and miles of beach.

This year's event will get a kickoff from the second annual Knitmaine-ia fashion show Thursday, Sept. 8 at 4.30 p.m. The event, organized by the Women of St. Margaret's (Belfast) and Fiber College, will showcase a fantastic variety of handknitted and crocheted garments and accessories. Tickets are $10, which includes a wine and cheese reception to follow. They should be purchased in advance at Heavenly Socks, 82 Main St., Belfast; Fiddlehead Artisan Supplies, 159 High St., Belfast; or Searsport Shores Campground. Knitmaine-ia, which is likely to sell out, will benefit New Hope for Women.
